Nihari

Nihari was originally conceived as an extremely nourishing breakfast. It is a rich and hearty lamb stew which used to be given to labourers to keep their strength up over a long day. The name comes from the Urdu nihar, meaning early morning. Nowadays it is more commonly eaten at dinner, and often enjoyed at religious celebrations like Eid al-Adha, the Muslim festival that marks the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. Meat from the animals sacrificed during the festival is usually given to the less privileged, so that even the poorest families can eat well.
